Why length changes the fit more than the size

A long puffer is cut from a longer block, not from a bigger one. The shoulder and chest are identical to the short version — what changes is where the hem lands and how much fill sits below the waist. That means sizing up to get length is the wrong move: you get a boxy jacket with dropped shoulders and a hem that still ends in the same place. Buy your normal size and check the stated back length against a coat you already own.

Below the waist there is no body heat to trap, so long cuts carry more fill in the skirt than you would expect. That is also where a cheap rep fails first: the lower baffles go flat after a season because the fill settles and nothing redistributes it. Shake the coat out and hang it rather than folding it.
